Customers, shareholders and consumers are increasingly demanding environmentally responsible products and services.
We comply with environmental standards and demonstrate our commitment to the environment in all day-to-day operations.
The ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems (EMS) certification demonstrates our commitment to the environment, as well as continuously improving corporate outlook and integrating the realities of a changing world.
ISO 14001 provides clear guidance on how we manage the environmental aspects of our business activities more effectively, while taking into consideration environmental protection, pollution prevention and socio-economic needs.
It ensures that we comply with environmental legislation, have better use of energy and resources, and reduce costs over time.
By demonstrating a real commitment to the environment we have transformed our company culture, improving employee ethics and the workplace.
Norcross has been part of the Enviro-Mark programme for eight years.
Our environmental policy defines the objectives and targets that drive performance improvements. Waste streams / maps have been defined and an environmental
impact and aspects register maintained for each activity with controls in place to minimise and eliminate waste.
Norcross pioneered Greenprint in 1999 in collaboration with the Waitakere City Council and was an early adopter of this programme recognising the need for both environmental sustainability and the health and wellbeing of our people.
We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our own activities and helping our customers and business partners do the same. Our management of carbon, waste, water and paper use involves ambitious reduction targets (such as 5% carbon emissions reduction year on year and 10% reduction of waste to landfill).
Carbon Footprint Reporting
Norcross is fully aware of the global standards for measuring and reporting on greenhouse gas emissions published in the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol.
We currently report on KG's of paper used for our main customers. The 2012/13 plan is to further measure direct and indirect emissions covering:
• Scope 1 (diesel fuel from service fleet, natural gas, and refrigerants emissions from air conditioning units)
• Scope 2 (indirect GHG emissions from consumption of purchased electricity and covered in scope 2 and outsourced activities such as air travel and waste disposal) emissions.
Toxic Emission
Norcross does not emit waste classified as toxic. The 2012/13 supplier evaluation plan is to measure and report compliance for our key suppliers.
Waste and Disposal
Norcross has a zero waste to landfill goal for our business and manufacturing operations with a 10% reduction target year on year. In 2011/12, we reduced our waste to landfill by 101 tonnes – a 41% reduction from 2009/2010
levels. This was attributable to;
• Increasing staff awareness of waste separation at our locations.
• Waste audits improving waste reductions and waste contamination.
Waste and disposal is measured in the following ways:
• Tonnes waste to landfill by category (general waste, pallets, oily waste water and hazardous bulk).
In 2009/10 we recognised the need to identify, measure and manage environmental risk in our supply energy ratings and measurements,
Our actual energy use is measured in the following categories;
• Diesel Fuel L
• Petrol L
• LPG fuel L (includes forklift)
Paper Options
With regards to responsible paper sourcing, we are committed to responsible stewardship through the full product lifecycle in order to verify paper as a socially and environmentally responsible communication medium. Minimum requirements and compliance levels for our paper sources include;
